History

Background

Canongate Technology, until a few years ago, was a wholly owned subsidiary of Scottish Courage the leading UK Brewing Company. In September 1996 the management successfully completed a Management Buy-Out of the company. Canongate was formed in 1982, having previously been responsible, as part of the Scottish and Newcastle Breweries Engineering Division, for the total engineering of the Brewing Group's control and automation facilities.

The company was formed to further develop and market the technology and innovative measurement systems which had been developed in-house. Since 1982 The Canongate Group has grown organically and by acquisition from its initial complement of 10 and now employs more than 60 staff.

Its main office and manufacturing facility is in Edinburgh, but engineering, service and sales personnel are also located in regional offices in Newcastle, Manchester, Nottingham and Peterborough.

Canongate is involved in Process Control in its widest sense, by providing products and services at each of the principle levels of automation, namely,

and specialises in complete "design and build" turnkey packages incorporating any or all of the above.

(a) Primary Instrumentation

Through its Embra, Acumet, Holledge and Procal instrument ranges, Canongate manufactures a variety of systems for measuring the following parameters in liquids:

• Level
• Density
• Alcohol Content/Concentration
• Carbon Dioxide Content
• Dissolve Oxygen Content

Through technology such as non-intrusive ultrasonics and permeable membranes, this instrument range has provided unique solutions to process measurement problems in the food, beverage & chemical Industries world-wide.

(b) Plant Control Systems

Canongate has many years experience in the automation of process plant particularly in the Food and Beverage industry. Our expertise ranges from the handling of bulk solids, through cooking boiling and extraction processes, to fermentation and filtration control. We also have an intimate knowledge of the control aspects of packaging lines having provided complete control systems for several bottle, can and cask filling lines in recent years. Canongate can provide complete turnkey packages using a variety of PLCs and microprocessors. Our manufacturing capability includes control and MCC panel building. We are manufacturer approved users of Siemens and Intel equipment, and have in-depth experience of many other systems including Texas, Allen-Bradley, and GE-Fanuc PLCs.

(c) SCADA / Management Information Systems

Our systems are written using powerful packages such as FactoryLink, InTouch, Fix, WinCC & CIMplicity. These are among most widely used configurable SCADA packages in the world. Canongate was one of the first Approved System Integrators for FactoryLink appointed in the UK, and we have completed over 50 systems in the last 2 years in applications ranging from Energy Management to Bottle Line Monitoring. We are now partners with all the major SCADA providers.

A few years ago, Canongate further strengthened its position in this area, by entering into a marketing and integration agreement with Prodac Systems Ltd of Israel. Canongate are now responsible for the PRODAC management information and decision support system for packaging lines, in the UK, Ireland and Scandinavia.

Customer Base

Canongate's customer list includes all the major brewing companies in the UK, and with 35% of our turnover being generated abroad, major companies on each continent. A growing number of customers within the Spirits Industry are adopting our measurement equipment for applications such as tank volume and alcohol measurement.

Outside the beverage sector, our products and services are used by the Food, Pharmaceutical, Chemical and Petrochemical Industries in the UK and overseas.

Canongate is represented in over 25 countries throughout the world by a series of distributors. Our U.S. subsidiary, CT Inc. was set up in 1992 to maintain the US beverage sector business and develop other markets. CT Inc. operates out of Chicago, Illinois.

Quality

Quality of product and service is regarded as a priority within Canongate. We have adopted the principles of Total Quality Management in all our activities, and the company achieved accreditation to ISO9002 for its products in 1995. Our Quality Manual is available for scrutiny to present and prospective customers, and we welcome visits to our factory for assessment at first hand of our capability.
